In 1993, Himeji Castle was registered as the first World Heritage site in Japan together with the Horyu Temple in Nara. All surfaces of the castle are plastered by the construction technique which is called the “White Plaster Full Coating Method”. By the advent of firearms, plaster which has the highly fire-resistant property came to be employed to protect castles. What is the property of the plaster? What factor allowed the castle to coat with vast amount of plaster which was extremely expensive? This program focuses on its historical background and plaster’s chemical property.
